Hello Everyone!  I hope everyone’s week is going well and staying busy with the things you enjoy.  I know I have!  I recently finished two diapercakes and fabric garland for some pretty awesome ladies!  The first of the two diapercakes is for my future nephew, Boston Jon.  His beautiful mother, Lizzie, has decorated his nursery so cute I had to create something quirky enough to fit the scheme of things.  Another hostess at the shower, Rachel, did an awesome job decorating and making a few of her own DIY’s such as the monogram ‘B’, shadow box, and the grandparents corsage (which I didn’t get a pic of, sorry). I made the diapercake and Lizzie’s corsage.

Over the weekend I also managed to swing by a little’s girls house…Miss A – It was her 4TH BIRTHDAY!  Love that girl…

The other diapercake and fabric garland I made, was for my sweet cousin.  She is expecting her first, baby girl, in July!  I’m so excited for her and know she will be the worlds BEST mom!

On a side note, we have 3 adorable (mixed) puppies that need to find a good home.  We have 2 males and 1 female. The mom is a silver lab and the father/s is unknown?  Let me know if you’d like to have one…they are FREE! Today they are 4 weeks old.  They will be ready to take at 5 weeks, May 24th.

(the female is the  one on the left, brown eyebrows)

With the release of The Hunger Games, I decided to post a hair tutorial on how to do a Dutch braid, like Katniss Everdeen.

The Dutch braid is much like your traditional French braid but instead of pulling each middle hair strand UNDER your outer strands, you pull it OVER your outer hair strands. A reversed French Braid.  If you click either picture, you can get HOW TO insructions.

After reading and watching The Hunger Games, I was super pumped to find a Hunger Games Name Generator!  I couldn’t wait to see what my cool and slightly strange character name would be. Just plug your own name and gender in and you will be delivered a slightly offbeat name.

My name was Orchid Jardine!  I like it :-)

And if you don’t like the first one you get, try again — it’ll be different every time. Happy Hunger Games & May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor!

Last weekend my friend, Jayna, placed an order with me for a diapercake. The nursery theme is lambs and the colors are blue, chocolate-brown and ivory. Jayna had purchased a mobile for the crib, a couple of receiving blankets, and a stuffed toy lamb she wanted to incorporate into the diapercake. I had never used a mobile or a full-sized stuff animal before but I believe it worked out quite nicely.  Jayna and the mother to be were both very happy with the end result.

After completing the diapercake, I began packing my bag for our Oklahoma trip.  Landon and I were heading out for a few short days of fishing and  a night out in Oklahoma City for St. Patties Day.  All and all, it was very FUN!

I want to share a personal story in hopes to inform, not to scare or seek sympathy from anyone.

Back in September of 2011 I noticed I had reoccurring blemish (or what I thought was a zit) on my right cheek that kept coming back.  After about a month I realized it wasn’t going away.  It began as a small pink patch (about the size of a pencil eraser) then progressed to the size of a dime. The patch had a slightly elevated rolled border and a crusted indentation in the center. As the growth progressed in the next four months, tiny blood vessels developed on the surface, making the patch more red in color, rather than pink. There was never any noticeable discomfort other than the fact I constantly looked like I had a blemish on my face for FOUR MONTHS!  Stupid I know…I should have gone to the dermatologist sooner!

Not only had I been sweeping the issue under the rug for 4 months, but I had personally witnessed my own mother making trips to the dermatologist, to have her “spots” removed.  I fell victim to sun exposure & tanning beds back when I was in junior high and high school.  I loved to tan!  There was nothing like the warm rays on my body. It made me feel good, relaxed. In the short-term, it even made me look good. In college (2002-2006) I tanned mainly in tanning beds, for special events, and the same routine occurred for the next five years. In 2011 my love affaire ended, but it wasn’t a two-way street.  I quit tanning altogether because I noticed sun spots on my face and chest. I made a vow to myself I would never tan in a tanning bed again. I purchased my first Spray Tan Machine in hopes to get the suntan look without the harsh UV exposure.  It has been the best choice I’ve ever made.  I truly believe I have “saved” my skin from any further damage and I pray no more ”spots” come up on my face or anywhere else for that matter.

On January 25th, 2012 I had my appointment to get my Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) spots, yes spots, removed.  A week before my appointment, I had another spot show up on my forehead. It was small, like how the one on my cheek started off. The diagnosis process my physician recommended was using the Cryosurgery method, in which the tumor tissue is destroyed by freezing with liquid nitrogen, without the need for cutting or anesthesia. The procedure can be repeated at the same session to ensure total destruction of malignant cells. He had to freeze the one on my cheek twice, to ensure total destruction of the bad cells. The pain was bearable, slight stinging sensation. After the procedure you can expect the following:  the growth blisters, becomes crusted/scabbed, and usually falls off within 1-2 weeks. Cryosurgery is (85-90%) effective for the most common growths and is the treatment of choice for patients with bleeding disorders or an intolerance to anesthesia.

Here are some other removal options you could choose from:  here

(if you hover your mouse over the picture, it will explain the different stages)

Top five warning signs of Basal Cell Carcinoma: check them out here.

These are my results, over a 10 day span.

I strongly suggest making an appointment with your dermatologist if you think you have or clearly have any of these signs. I am scheduled to return for a follow-up in July to ensure all cells are clear of BCC. Should any spots reoccur, the physician might recommend a different type of treatment such as Mohs micrographic surgery, highly effective – 98% or better.

While BCCs and other skin cancers are almost always curable when detected and treated early, it is best to prevent them in the first place. So the next time you are enjoying a day in the sun, make these habits part of your daily care routine: bbc prevention guidelines

  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Do not burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths. A spray tan is the healthiest and safest way to achieve your SUNLESS suntan!
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
  • See your doctor every year for a professional skin exam.
I know the perfect place to get your professional custom spray tan!

I thank God every time I look in the mirror, for my “spots” could have been something much worse than what they were.  If you want to protect yourself, your family, friends, co-workers…please, share this information and help fight against what could be, CANCER.

SAFE TAN. HAPPY SKIN.

Getting Organized

The holidays are over and it’s time to get back to normal. In efforts to putting the Christmas tree & decorations up I realized…I really need to get the Halloween/ Thanksgiving Decor and office organized.  So, off to the Dollar Store I went.  $78 later, I returned with these!

I started breaking down the Christmas Tree & decorations around noon and was done around 2:00 pm. Not  to bad huh? But then it was time to tackle this mess…

Ge’ez, it’s almost embarrassing to show these pictures. It looks like I NEVER clean! Hahaha! Well, I do, but I do not properly stow items away. Oops! Here’s my progress.

The items on the left all went to the attic and I was able to organize my crafts in the office too!  How did your progress go?

Happy New Year

I know, I know, I know…It’s been a while! December always seems to be the busiest month not just for me but for everyone.  Lets see where to start…Well, both Landon and I turned a whopping 28 years old, we’re going to be an Aunt/Uncle for the 11th time, we went goose hunting for the first time, took a family trip to the mountains and went skiing, and won a MacBook! All-And-All, I’d say December was a pretty awesome month!

We brought in the new year with a few friends, playing cards and dominos. Nothing to crazy but a nice friendly gathering to celebrate what’s to come for 2012. I haven’t really thought or decided on any goals to happen in my life for this year but I hope it will bring exciting and new experiences to me (as it always does).  What are you’re goals, hopes, or dreams for 2012?

About a month ago I was lucky enough to gather old barn wood boards with the help of my husband and a few good friends.  I took my time hand picking each board and made sure they had character. Character meaning: dings, scratches, paint, and a nice weathered look.  Once I got the wood home, I got the power washer after them.  They were super dirty but cleaned up very nice. I measured each board to 5′-0″ to 5′-1″ long & Landon cut them for me.

I wanted the top to stagger in height a little and not be straight across.  Straight across seemed to contemporary for our cabin themed bedroom.

After cutting the boards, we used wood screws and screwed them down to pre-cut 2X4′s.  I then applied 2-3 coats of polyurethane to all areas but the back.

Here’s what our bed looked like before, couldn’t even see the headboard!

And After:

I hope to add a pair of these from westelm.com

And I also need to find or make something to hang above the headboard. I’ll post the update later.

Here are a few crafty items I made with some of the leftover wood…

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Halloween 2011

Haunted Houses…who doesn’t like a good scare right?  Well, let me tell you, it’s a whole different experience when you are the one doing the scaring.  It’s so much FUN! And FUNNY! I don’t know why but it brings great joy to me when I successfully get a terrified, gut-retching scream from a grown adult. Hahaha…it’s very satisfying! I think it’s because Landon always scares me at the house and when I try to scare him back, it usually ends in complete failure. So, even though it’s not Landon, it’s still rewarding!  My sister-in-law and good friend went with me to “scare” at the opening night, of the haunted house.

I love Halloween Parties! Getting dressed up and decorating the house with fun & spooky items is so much fun!  Thank goodness for my friend Linsey, she let me borrow the majority of the decorations.  My niece also helped me out by doing a craft project, covering vases.  She loves doing crafts just as much as I do.  Lucky for me she was on Fall Break so I assigned her homework…Cover 6 clear vases with tissue paper, using a 50/50 mixture of water and elmers glue. She said it was by far the best homework she’s ever gotten!  She did a great job!

The craft my niece and nephew got to take home with them were the hanging Halloween lanterns.  They had fun picking out different colors of tissue paper and tearing it into smaller pieces. (Thanks Nana for helping with that!)

After the paper dried for a day, I used my silhouette machine and vinyl to cut out spooky faces & words to place on the outside of the jar. They turned out so good! We also made time to go to the local pumpkin patch. The kids had such a great time sliding, jumping, and hunting for pumpkins.

For my house party. I didn’t get the greatest pictures of the decorations but here are some I snapped with my phone…

Food Menu:
Deviled Eggs – Avocado spiders
Candy Corn Pretzel Bites
Sweet & Spicy Pecans
BLT & Salsa Dip and Chips
Bloody Meatballs
Sinful Wraps – Peanut butter and chocolate

Happy Halloween Everyone!
